Game NotesBelton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will open defense of its American Southwest Conference play when the Cru opens ASC play with another home game this Saturday. UMHB will host Sul Ross State in a 1:00 PM kickoff at Crusader Stadium to close out a four-game home stand for the Cru.
The Cru is coming off a record-setting performance in a 59-13 victory over Belhaven University last Saturday. UMHB improved to 4-0 on the season with that win and set a new NCAA Division III record with 15 sacks. The Cru also held the Blazers to an ASC record low of -87 rushing yards. UMHB will be looking for that same type of defensive effort against a talented and improved Sul Ross State squad.
"Sul Ross is young but they have a lot of talent and Coach (John) Pearce has them playing well," Cru Head Coach
Pete Fredenburg said. "He is doing a nice job there of changing the culture and putting in his system. They try to throw the ball before you can get there, so we have to try to find some ways to make the quarterback hold the ball so our pressure can get to him."
Sul Ross State is 1-3 overall and is 0-1 in conference play on the season following a 38-28 loss at Louisiana College last Saturday. UMHB won last year's meeting between the two teams 56-9 in Alpine and the Cru leads the all-time series 17-0 entering Saturday's game.
UMHB also enters the contest ranked #3 in the country by the American Football Coaches Association and #4 in the nation by D3football.com. The Cru has a 58-game regular season winning streak, has won 43 straight regular season home contests and has never lost a regular season game at Crusader Stadium.
UMHB will also be hosting its first annual "Hometown Heroes" Day at Saturday's game to honor and thank First Responders from across Bell County. All first responders and their families will be admitted to the game free of charge. There will also be static displays of fire and police vehicles available to the public outside the stadium before the contest.
