San Antonio, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team rallied late but could not overcome Trinity University's big advantage from the free-throw line as the Cru fell to the Tigers 72-65 Monday night in San Antonio. UMHB is now 0-2 to start the season with both of the losses coming to the Tigers. Trinity improves to 2-0 on the year with the victory.
The Cru fell behind by double digits in the second quarter as Trinity opened up a 15-point lead at 34-19. UMHB scored the final four points of the period and held the Tigers scoreless for the final 4:50 to cut it to 34-23 at halftime. Trinity would stretch the lead to 16 points at the end of the third quarter before UMHB rallied in the final period. The Cru outscored the Tigers 25-17 over the final ten minutes but could not dig all the way out of that third quarter hole as the Tigers hit 15-23 from the free-throw line over the final two periods.
Kendra Wynn posted her second straight double-double for the Cru, leading the team with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tori Tucker added 14 points and hit 4-7 from three-point range and three other players chipped in seven points apiece. UMHB shot 36 percent from the field as a team, but hit just 29 percent in the first two quarters. The Cru was 10-17 from the free-throw line while the Tigers hit 26-36 from the charity stripe. UMHB also turned the ball over 26 times in the loss while forcing 27 Tiger turnovers.
Monica Holguin topped Trinity with 20 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Anecia Richardson and Mollie Hughes added 11 points apiece and Hughes pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The Tigers were 8-19 from three-point range in addition to their advantage from the free-throw line in the win and Trinity shot 38 percent from the field as a team.
The Cru women will return to action with another road, non-conference game Thursday evening. UMHB will travel to Marshall to take on Wiley College in a 5:30 PM tip-off. The Cru's next home game is Tuesday, November 24th, against Southwestern University.
