Huntsville, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team led at halftime, but could not keep up with the depth and size of Division I Same Houston State as the Cru fell to the Bearcats 75-59 in an exhibition game Saturday in Huntsville. Exhibition games do not count in a team's win-loss record and the game was the first for the Cru women under head coach Mark Morefield.
UMHB built an early lead before Sam Houston State fought back to lead by as many as eight points in the first quarter. The Cru used 15 bench points and 14 points off turnovers to claw back into it in the second quarter and used three straight three-pointers in the final 1:27 to take a 35-33 halftime lead. The Bearcats dominated the third quarter and held UMHB to just nine points in the period and then held on in the fourth quarter to ice the win.
Jonelle Smith hit 5-11 three-pointers to lead the Cru with 18 points. Destini Oakmon added 10 points and Bridjai Chaney and Alexandria Howze pulled down five rebounds apiece for UMHB. The Cru shot 39 percent from the field and went 9-27 from three-point range. UMHB turned the ball over 29 times, but was only out rebounded 33-32 in the game.
Angela Beadle led SHSU with 16 points and eight rebounds. Shernise Robertson added 15 points and Kamry Orr had 14 points and seven steals. The Bearcats shot 50 percent from the field and went 16-21 from the free-throw line compared to UMHB's 6-8 night from the stripe.
UMHB will now return home to open the regular season next Saturday. The Cru will take on Trinity University in an 8:00 Pm tip-off as the second game of a men's-women's doubleheader at the Mayborn Campus Center.
