BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped the final game of a three-contest doubleheader with Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. The loss dropped the Cru to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action. The Yellow Jackets moved to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Emily Marrs got the Cru on the board first, hitting a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to score Kelsey Vann. The Cru held a 1-0 lead until the top of the third when Vann hit a grand slam over the left field wall to score four, improving the Cru's lead to 5-0. Cori Drake hit the Cru's second home run of the day in the top of the fifth for a 6-0 lead before Howard Payne scored two in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to four. UMHB added another run in the top of the sixth with a fielder's choice from Drake, scoring Amelia Cluke. UMHB led 7-2 before Howard Payne put together a six-run bottom of the ninth, including a three-RBI home run from Kodi Glosson to secure the 8-7 win for the Yellow Jackets.
Vann, Drake, Leah Brown and Janie Neyland each led the Cru with two hits while Vann had a team-high four RBI. Tiffany Birdwell took the loss for the Cru, allowing the home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Yellow Jackets the win. UMHB totaled seven runs on eight hits with four errors while the Yellow Jackets had eight runs on nine hits with three errors.
UMHB returns to action Tuesday, February 24th in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Texas Lutheran University.
