Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team overcame multiple deficits and an eight run inning to win the game with a walk-off homer as the Cru topped Louisiana College 17-16 in ten innings Saturday in Belton. UMHB improves to 13-8 overall and 10-5 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-16 overall and 4-14 in ASC play on the year.
Louisiana College grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Garrett Parsons RBI double, a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring error. UMHB cut it to 3-2 on Will Stafford's two-run single in the bottom of second, but left the bases loaded in a bid to add more. A run-scoring passed ball gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead in the top of the third before the Cru put four on the board to take the lead for the first time in the bottom of that frame. Tripp Reeves and Emery Atkisson had RBI singles to tie the game and Stafford followed a double play with a two-run triple to make it 6-4 UMHB after three innings. Chase Burrow blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cru a 9-4 edge. Louisiana College used an eight-run fifth inning to retake the lead. Jermaine Liggins followed a bases-loaded walk with a grand slam over the left centerfield wall to tie the game and Kade Van Norman's RBI single gave the Wildcats a 10-9 lead. Mark Riendeau added a two-run homer to stretch the lead to 12-9. Burrow's two-run double pulled UMHB to within 12-11 in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh pushed LC's lead to 13-11, but Dakota Parsons led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run and UMHB added a run on an error to tie the game up again. Garrett Parsons untied it with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning for the Wildcats but the Cru answered again in the bottom of the inning. Rob Loewe had a sacrifice fly and LC committed a two-run error to make it 16-16. UMHB had the potential game-winning run thrown out at the plate to end the ninth and send the game to extra innings. Burrow would end it in the bottom of the tenth when he blasted a 2-2 offering deep over the left centerfield wall to give the Cru the 17-16 win.
Cory Farr threw two perfect innings of relief to get the win and improve to 2-1 on the season. Burrow was 6-6 with six RBI in the game and Loewe and Stafford added four hits apiece. Lane Noakes took the loss for LC to drop to 0-1. Parsons had four hits and four RBI for the Wildcats. The two teams combined for 39 hits, 12 walks and six hit batters in the game.
The Cru will host Trinity University for a 7:00 PM non-conference game on Tuesday. UMHB returns to ASC play with a three-game series at U.T.-Dallas next Thursday and Friday in Richardson
