Softball drops doubleheader to No. 2 U.T.-Tyler

TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor dropped a doubleheader to No. 2 University of Texas at Tyler Wednesday afternoon in Tyler, falling 2-0 and 6-0 to the Patriots.  The losses dropped the Cru to 16-11 on the season and 14-7 in American Southwest Conference action while the Patriots improved to 31-1 overall and 21-1 in conference play.
 
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when U.T.-Tyler scored two runs to take the lead. Tyler's Christa Harnett reached on a UMHB error, allowing Lexi Ackroyd to score for a 1-0 lead, followed by a fielder's choice RBI from Raven Rodriguez, scoring Amanda Lopez for the 2-0 win. Tiffany Birdwell took the loss for the Cru, pitching six innings with just four hits and two runs. Birdwell faced 29 batters with two extra-base hits, three walks and one strikeout. Janie Neyland led the Cru at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one double. Cori Drake, Karley Free and Myranda Hinojosa also added hits. UMHB totaled six hits and three errors while the Patriots had four hits and no errors.
 
Rodriguez gave the Patriots a lead in the second game, scoring off a sacrifice fly from Jackie Mendez for a 1-0 U.T.-Tyler lead in the bottom of the third. Ackroyd struck next, hitting an RBI double to left centerfield scoring Shelby Shelton for a 2-0 Patriot lead. U.T.-Tyler added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when KK Stevens hit a two-run home run over the centerfield wall. The Patriots added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, sealing the 6-0 win. Haley Parker took the loss for the Cru, pitching 4.2 innings with four runs on four hits. Parker walked two batters and allowed two extra-base hits. Karen Tennis entered the game in relief, pitching 1.1 innings with two runs on two hits. Hinojosa led the Cru with two hits while Neyland added one. UMHB totaled three hits and two errors while the Patriots had six runs on six hits with one error.

UMHB returns to action Friday, April 17th in a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Sul Ross State University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton. The Cru will honor the 2015 senior class after Friday's contests and finish the series on Saturday, April 18th.
