Tournament Central PagePhoto GalleryTyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team grabbed a 4-2 win over Hardin-Simmons University in the opening round of the 2015 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon in Tyler. The win improved UMHB to 21-16 on the season and advances them to the winner's bracket. Hardin-Simmons fell to 22-15 and will continue play in the elimination bracket.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Sarah Truelove hit an RBI double to left field, scoring two runs for the Cowgirls.
Karley Free tied the contest for UMHB in the top of the sixth, blasting an RBI single to center field scoring
Myranda Hinojosa and
Janie Neyland. UMHB then took a two-run lead when
Kelsey Vann hit an RBI single to score
Leah Brown and Free for a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Hardin-Simmons was unable to score again, giving UMHB the 4-2 first-round victory.
Myranda Hinojosa led the Cru with four this while Free added two and three other Crusaders each recorded one. Free led UMHB with two RBI while Vann added one.
Haley Parker pitched a complete seven-inning game for UMHB, allowing three hits and two runs with two strikeouts. UMHB totaled four runs on nine hits with two errors while the Cowgirls had two runs on three hits with two errors.
UMHB advances to face No. 1 seed U.T.-Tyler at 7 p.m. Hardin-Simmons will move to the elimination bracket and face the loser of No. 3 seed Louisiana College and No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist Friday, May 1
