SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a doubleheader with Trinity University Tuesday evening in San Antonio, beating the Tigers 9-4 in the first contest and falling 5-2 in the second. UMHB improved to 16-8 on the day while the Tigers moved to 10-16.
UMHB used a four-run fourth inning to gain an advantage over the Tigers in the first contest.
Karley Free opened the scoring with an RBI single, allowing
Kourtney Bevers to score from second.
Leah Brown followed that with a three-run home run, scoring Free and
Cori Drake for a 4-0 Cru lead. Bevers scored again in the top of the fifth off a Trinity error before
Myranda Hinojosa hit a sacrifice fly to score Free.
Bailey Bohlken then hit a single to score Brown, extending UMHB's lead to 7-0. Trinity responded with one-run innings in the fifth and sixth before UMHB added two more in the top of the seventh with groundout RBI from Brown and
Emily Marrs. Trinity hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh for two more runs but was unable to catch the Cru, giving UMHB the 9-4 win. Drake and Free led the Cru with two hits each while Brown had a team-leading four RBI. Free scored a game-high three runs followed by Bevers and Brown with two each.
Tiffany Birdwell earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. UMHB totaled nine runs on 11 hits with one error while the Tigers had four runs on 12 hits with one error.
Trinity use a single-run second inning and three-run third inning to gain a 4-0 lead on UMHB in the second game.
Leah Brown hit her second home run of the day in the top of the fourth, cutting the lead to 4-1. The Tigers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, before
Myranda Hinojosa hit an RBI single to center field, scoring
Christy Garrett to cut the Tiger lead to 5-2. UMHB was unable to generate another scoring, splitting the doubleheader with the 5-2 loss. Brown and Bevers led the Cru with two hits while Brown and
Myranda Hinojosa each added one RBI.
Haley Parker took the loss for the Cru, allowing five runs on six hits. UMHB totaled two runs, seven hits and three errors while Trinity recorded five runs and six hits.
UMHB returns to action in a weekend series at Louisiana College in Pineville, La. UMHB opens the series in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 10
th.
