BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team will open postseason play in the 2016 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament on Tuesday, November 1
st in Belton.
The Cru earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will open play hosting No. 7 seed Sul Ross State University in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal matchup at the UMHB Soccer Fields. The semifinal and final rounds of the tournament will be hosted by Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. The winner of UMHB's quarterfinal game will advance to face the winner of No. 3 seed UT Tyler and No. 6 seed East Texas Baptist University. The championship match will be played on Sunday, November 6
th at 1 p.m. with the winner of that match receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
"This is our fourth consecutive time to make the tournament, so we are just trying to take it game-by-game," Head Coach
Barry Elkins said. "Of course our ultimate goal is to make the finals and win the championship, but we have two tough opponents before that. We are going to take it one game at a time and enjoy the postseason."
Elkins returns 20 letter winners from last year's squad, including seven All-ASC honorees.
Courtney Craig and
Allison Porter return for their senior seasons after being named First Team All-ASC a season ago. Porter has five goals with four assists on the season while Craig is UMHB's starting goalkeeper and holds a 0.49 goals-against average in 15 games.
Sarah Rempe was also named First Team All-ASC last year and anchors UMHB's midfield while
Kathryn Parker,
Miranda Aleman and
Madison Link were all Second Team honorees. Parker leads UMHB with 10 goals and five game-winning goals Aleman and Link are key contributors in the midfield and defense, respectively.
Briana Hester also returns after earning Third Team All-ASC last season as a junior. Hester has three goals on the season and ranks third on the team with 35 shots.
The Cru welcomed a strong group of freshman in 2016, led by
Chelsea Graham,
Taylor Marques and
Cassidi Musser. Graham has seven goals on the season and leads UMHB with seven assists while Marques had four goals, two game-winning goals and two assists. Musser is UMHB's leading backup goalkeeper with two wins and one solo shutout on the season.
