Women’s Basketball tops Schreiner 71-47

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a second-half offensive surge to top Schreiner University 71-47 Tuesday evening in Belton. The win improved UMHB to 3-1 while the Mountaineers fell to 0-3.
 
Schreiner used a pair of 4-0 runs in the first quarter to gain a lead on UMHB before the Cru tied the contest at eight. The Mountaineers scored six unanswered before UMHB added four to end the first quarter with a two-point deficit. The second quarter remained pretty even as the Mountaineers held a one-point lead at halftime. The Cru then used a strong third quarter to gain advantage on Schreiner, outscoring the Mountaineers 18-11 in the quarter and holding them to just three points in the quarter until just under two minutes remaining. UMHB ended the third quarter with a six-point lead then secured the win in the fourth, outscoring the Mountaineers 27-9 to earn the 71-47 victory.

Kendra Wynn led UMHB with a double-double, scoring 19 points and adding 13 rebounds. Jonelle Smith added 12 points and nine rebounds while Shelby Jasso and Kendall Rollins each added eight points. Jesslyn Poole also added eight rebounds while Rollins and Alicia Blackwell each recorded four steals. UMHB totaled 51 rebounds, 13 assists and 14 steals, shooting 36.0 percent in the contest and 20 percent from beyond the arc.

Alina Hilliard led the Mountaineers with 11 points followed by Sabriyyah Fennell with seven. Schreiner totaled 39 rebounds, 10 assists and two steals, shooting 31.4 percent in the contest and 23.1 percent from beyond the arc.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, November 26th in a 7 p.m. game against Birmingham-Southern College at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
