BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team defeated Birmingham-Southern College 72-48 Saturday evening in Belton. The win improved UMHB to 4-1 while the Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season.
UMHB used a 14-9 run to end the first quarter and grab a five-point lead over the Panthers. Birmingham-Southern cut UMHB's lead to one in the second but the Cru again went on a run to end the half, outscoring the Panthers 15-5 to go into halftime with a 36-26 lead. UMHB did not trail again, limiting the Panthers to just 22 second-half points to secure the 72-48 victory.
Kendra Wynn led UMHB with 15 points followed by
Jonelle Smith with 14. Wynn also recorded a team-high four assists followed by Smith and
Meghan Turner with three each. Defensively,
Antoinette Iroko led UMHB with seven rebounds followed by Wynn and
Haven Neal with five each.
Kendall Rollins had a team-high two blocks while Wynn tied the UMHB Division III record for steals in a game with eight. UMHB totaled 47 rebounds, 16 assists and 19 steals, shooting 36.2 percent in the contest and 59.3 percent from the free throw line.
Emile Olsen led the Panthers with 10 points and eight rebounds. Birmingham-Southern recorded 37 rebounds, 12 assists and six steals, forcing 12 turnovers. The Panthers shot 35.2 percent in the contest and 60 percent from the free throw line.
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, November 29
th in a 5:30 p.m. game at University of the Ozarks in Clarksville.
