Softball splits doubleheader with No. 4 East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split its final day of competition with No. 4 East Texas Baptist University, falling 6-4 to the Tigers before edging ETBU 3-2. The Cru improved to 4-8 on the season and 3-6 in American Southwest Conference play while the Tigers moved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in league play after the day.
 
East Texas Baptist scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to gain advantage in the first game of the day. UMHB's Cori Drake responded with her second home run of the series, slamming one over the center field wall in the top of the third to cut the Tigers lead to 2-1. UMHB added three more runs in the top of the fourth, with a two-RBI single from Bailey Bohlken and a run scored by Dusti Douglas off a wild pitch. UMHB held the 4-2 lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Tigers scored for runs to secure the 6-4 victory. Kourtney Cummings and Drake led the Cru with two hits each while Kourtney Cummings, Christy Garrett, Douglas and Drake each scored runs for the Cru. Karen Tennis took the loss for UMHB, pitching 5.1 innings with nine hits and six runs allowed. Parker gave up five earned runs and struck out two batters in 5.1 innings pitched. Kelsey Knox pitched in relief, going 0.2 innings with one hit allowed. ETBU's Rachel Tello earned the win for the Tigers, pitching three shutout innings with four strikeouts. UMHB totaled four runs on six hits with one error while the Tigers had six runs on 10 hits with no errors.
 
Devon Walter scored first for the Cru, putting UMHB on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single from Leah Brown. UMHB added one more run in the top of the fourth inning when Cori Drake singled to right center field, scoring Karley Free. ETBU responded in the fifth inning when Lacey Lindsey and Jayme Perez scored, evening the contest at 2-2. Elizabeth Bowne scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh off an RBI single from Walter, giving UMHB the 3-2 victory. Walter led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders each had one. Three Crusaders scored runs while Drake and Walter each had an RBI. Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching two innings with just one hit allowed. Haley Parker started the contest, pitching five innings with two runs on six hits. Parker also added three strikeouts in 26 batters faced. Kelly Jo McLendon took the loss for ETBU, pitching 6.1 innings with six hits and three runs, striking out five batters. UMHB totaled three runs on six hits with no errors while the Tigers had two runs on seven hits with one error.


The Cru returns to action next weekend in an ASC series against the University of Texas at Tyler March 4th-5th at the Dee Dillon Field in Belton. The series begins Friday, March 4th with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and concludes Saturday, March 5th with a 1 p.m. single game.
