Softball splits doubleheader at U.T.-Dallas


RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split its opening day of competition at the University of Texas at Dallas Monday. UMHB fell 8-3 to the Comets in the series' opening game before earning a win by the same score in the second contest of the day. The win improved the Cru to 5-12 overall with a 4-10 record in American Southwest Conference play. U.T.-Dallas improved to 11-8 on the season with an 8-3 record in league action after the doubleheader.
 
Leah Brown opened the series with a home run in the top of the first inning, followed by another home run from Cori Drake to put the Cru up 2-0 early. The Comets responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump ahead 3-2. Drake struck again in the top of the third, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Brown, evening the game at 3-3. U.T.-Dallas then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 8-3 win over the Cru. Brown, Drake and Kourtney Cummings each recorded a game-high two hits while Brown led the Cru with two runs. Haley Parker took the loss for the Cru, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts. Lauren McLeod earned the win for the Comets, pitching a complete game with two earned runs on seven hits. UMHB totaled three runs on seven hits with two errors while the Comets had eight runs on 10 hits with two errors.
 
Brown again opened the second game with a home run, giving the Cru a 1-0 advantage early. Karley Free followed that with an RBI double through the right side, scoring Myranda Hinojosa before Kourtney Cummings singles through the left side to score three and put the Cru up three runs in the top of the first. Hinojosa added two more runs in the top of the second inning, slamming a home run to left center field scoring Brown. The Comets responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run to score two runs before Brown hit her third home run of the day to give the Cru a 6-2 advantage. Free was next to get her name in the home run category, hitting another shot over the fence to score Hinojosa. U.T.-Dallas added just one run in the bottom of the sixth, securing the 8-3 victory for UMHB. Brown, Hinojosa and Drake led the Cru with three hits each while Brown and Hinojosa both scored three runs. Free had a game-high three RBI followed by Brown and Hinojosa with two. Karen Tennis earned the win for the Cru, pitching a complete seven innings with 10 hits and three runs allowed. Tennis struck out four batters and walked just two. UMHB totaled eight runs on 12 hits with no errors while the Comets had three runs on 10 hits with no errors.

UMHB resumes the series in a 12 p.m. single game against the Comets before returning home to face Concordia University Texas Friday, March 18th – Saturday, March 19th at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
