Softball sweeps Concordia Texas in doubleheader

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept its doubleheader with Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton, beating the Tornados 8-0 and 10-5. The wins improved the Cru to 7-13 on the season and 6-11 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 5-14 on the season and 2-9 in league play.

UMHB jumped to a lead early in the first game, putting together a three-run first inning to gain advantage. Karley Free put the Cru on the board first, reaching on an error to score Leah Brown and Christy Garrett for a 2-0 lead. Kourtney Cummings followed that with an RBI single to score Free, putting UMHB up three. The Cru added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Dusti Douglas and Leah Brown both hit in RBI to extend the lead to five runs. Kourtney Cummings hit in two more RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to center field, scoring Jade Lassetter and Karley Free for a 7-0 advantage. Kasi Cummings ended the game with an RBI single, scoring twin sister Kourtney Cummings and securing the 8-0 win for UMHB. Cori Drake, Kourtney Cummings and Kasi Cummings led the Cru with two hits each while Kourtney Cummings led the Cru with three RBI. Karley Free scored a team-high two runs, followed by six other Crusaders with one. Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching five innings with five hits and three strikeouts. Sydney Coffey took the loss for the Tornados, pitching four innings with two hits, seven runs and six earned runs. UMHB totaled eight runs on 12 hits while the Tornados had five hits and one error.
 
Concordia Texas scored first in the second game when Haley Dennett scored off an error.  Brown and Free responded for UMHB, hitting a pair of home runs to left field for a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the first. The Tornados added single-run innings in the second and the fourth for a 3-2 advantage before Kourtney Cummings hit another home run over the left field wall to even the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Kourtney Bevers followed that with a two-RBI double to left center field, scoring Dusti Douglas and Kasi Cummings for a 5-3 lead. Bevers scored on the next play off an RBI double from Brown to extend the lead to 6-3. UMHB added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth off an error and three fielder's choices to lead the Tornados 10-3 after four innings. The Tornados added one more run in the top of the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh but were unable to catch the Cru, securing the 10-5 UMHB victory. Free led the Cru with three hits followed by three other Crusaders with two each. Brown and Free each added a team-high two runs while Brown, Kourtney Cummings and Bevers recorded a team-high two RBI each. Kelsey Knox earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching five innings with three runs on seven hits. Haley Parker pitched in relief, going two innings with two runs on four hits allowed. UMHB totaled 10 runs on 11 hits with on error while the Tornados had five runs on 11 hits with one error.
 
UMHB finishes the series tomorrow in a 2 p.m. game against the Tornados at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
