BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept its doubleheader with Louisiana College today in Belton, beating the Wildcats 2-1 and 5-4. The wins improved the Cru to 11-15 on the season and 10-13 in American Southwest Conference action while Louisiana College fell to 16-12 overall and 14-6 in league play.
Morgan Dennis scored first for Louisiana College, scoring off an error in the top of the third for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
Devon Walter evened the contest in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double, scoring
Leah Brown to tie the game at one run each.
Kourtney Cummings scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, reaching off an RBI single from
Karley Free to put the Cru up 2-1 and give the Cru the one-run victory. Brown led the Cru with two hits while five other Crusaders added one. UMHB's
Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for UMHB, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Louisiana College's Savannah Settle took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. UMHB totaled two runs on seven hits with on error while the Wildcats had one run on six hits.
Walter opened scoring in the next game with her second RBI double of the day, scoring
Jade Lassetter in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 UMHB lead.
Cori Drake hit in two more runs in the bottom of the third, scoring
Myranda Hinojosa and Free with a two-RBI double to right center field. Louisiana College added one run in the top of the fourth inning before Brown scored Hinojosa from third with an RBI single. Sydney Falcon scored one more run for Louisiana College in the top of the sixth off an RBI triple from Jordan Mason before Mason scored off an RBI double from Jessica Johnson. Johnson then evened the game at 4-4, scoring off an RBI single from Jayde Westbrook. The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning when Hinojosa hit a game-winning RBI single to score
Kourtney Bevers and give the Cru the 5-4 victory. Hinojosa led the Cru with four hits followed by
Cori Drake and Bevers with two each. Hinojosa scored a game-high two runs followed by Free, Lassetter and Bevers while Drake had the team-leading two RBI.
Haley Parker opened the game in the circle, pitching five innings with eight hits and four runs.
Karen Tennis earned the win, pitching four innings with five hits and no runs. UMHB totaled five runs on 12 hits with two errors while the Wildcats had four runs on 13 hits with no errors.
UMHB finishes the series tomorrow in a 1 p.m. game against the Wildcats at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
