Softball beats Louisiana College 7-4

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team completed a three-game sweep of Louisiana College, beating the Wildcats 7-4 Saturday afternoon in Belton. The wins improved the Cru 12-15 on the season and 11-13 in American Southwest Conference action while Louisiana College fell to 16-13 overall and 14-7 in league play.
 
Shelby Bergeron scored first, putting the Wildcats up 1-0 in the top of the first. Karley Free responded, hitting a home run to left center field, scoring Leah Brown to put the Cru up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Mason tied the game in the top of the second inning off an RBI single from Reagan LeJeune. UMHB's Devon Walter scored next, reaching off an RBI single from Kourtney Bevers to put the Cru up 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Free struck again in the bottom of the third, hitting an RBI single to right field scoring Leah Brown for a 4-1 UMHB lead. Free scored next, reaching on an RBI double from Walter before Dusti Douglas hit in Walter with an RBI single to advance UMHB's lead to 6-2.  Walter again hit in an RBI in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Free off an RBI triple to deep right field for a 7-2 UMHB lead. Louisiana College added two more run in the top of the seventh but was unable to catch the Cru, giving UMHB the 7-4 victory. Brown, Free and Walter each led the Cru with a team-high two hits while Free had a game-high three RBI. Free also scored a game-high three runs. Kelsey Knox earned the win in the circle for the Cru, allowing four runs with two strikeouts. Taylor Leger took the loss for Louisiana College, pitching four innings with six hits and six runs. UMHB totaled seven runs on eight hits with no errors while the Wildcats had four runs on 14 hits with two errors.
 
UMHB returns to action Wednesday, April 6th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Trinity University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
