Volleyball sweeps opening day at Austin College Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team opened the 2016 season with two wins at the Austin College Invitational Friday in Sherman. UMHB opened the season at 2-0 with a 3-0 win over Centenary College and a 3-1 win over tournament-host Austin College.
 
UMHB jumped to an early lead over Centenary with a 25-13 first-set win, taking the next two sets in order 25-11, 25-16. Sarah Paolini and Maddie Frerich led the Cru with 11 kills each while Sydney Stolz added six. Natasha Evans led the Cru with 29 assists while Miranda Klein and Laryssa Wills each served two aces. Defensively, Jordan Yates led the Cru with 11 digs, Maddie Frerich added six blocks and Sydney Stolz tallied five blocks. UMHB totaled 40 kills on 77 total attacks for a .468 hitting percentage in the contest while Centenary had 25 kills on 91 attacks for a .044 hitting percentage.
 
In the second match of the day, UMHB again got out to an early lead with a 25-22 first-set victory. Austin College responded, taking the second set 25-20 before the Cru took the next two 25-13, 25-20 for the 3-1 match victory. Frerich led the Cru with 14 kills in the contest while Paolini and Abby Voskuil each added 13. Evans again had 46 assists while Klein was again a force at the service line, recording five service aces. Voskuil and Yates each recorded 19 digs defensively for UMHB, followed by Wills with 14 and Evans with 12. Frerich led UMHB's defensive efforts at the net with four blocks. UMHB hit .223 in the match with 58 kills on 157 total attacks while the Roos hit .182 with 44 kills on 143 total attacks.
 
UMHB returns to tournament action tomorrow with an 11 a.m. match against Pacific University and a 3 p.m. match against University of Dallas.
