Softball falls to Louisiana College in opening round of ASC Tournament

TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fell 5-3 to Louisiana College in the opening round of the 2017 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler.
 
The contest opened slowly with neither team scoring until the fifth inning. Linsey Tomlinson put UMHB on the scoreboard with an RBI double to right field, scoring Myranda Hinojosa. Makenzi Dawson followed that with an RBI single to score Tomlinson and put the Cru up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Louisiana College evened the game in the sixth. Mattie Stine opened with an RBI single to score Shelby Bergeron before Kourtney Leblanc knotted the game with a stolen base. The Wildcats added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, scoring off RBI from Stine and Taylor Hammock. UMHB added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tomlinson scored off an RBI from Devon Walter. Hinojosa and Tomlinson led the Cru with two hits each while Tomlinson scored a team-high two runs. Bergeron was the leader at the plate for the Wildcats, connecting for three hits and scoring two runs. Karen Tennis took the loss in the circle for UMHB, giving up eight hits and five runs in seven innings of work. Tennis struck out three batters and walked just two. Savannah Settle was the winner for Louisiana College, allowing eight hits and three runs with three strikeouts. UMHB totaled three runs on eight hits with one error while Louisiana College had five runs on eight hits with one error.

UMHB will face No.10 East Texas Baptist University tomorrow in a 10 a.m. elimination contest. Louisiana College advances to face No. 2 UT Tyler in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game on Thursday, April 27th. The winner of that game will advance to the tournament semifinal tomorrow at 4 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 29th with an if-needed game on Sunday, April 30th.  UMHB is now 26-15 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 25-15.
