BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team will open the 2017 season Friday, September 1st in a 7:00 p.m. match at Southwestern University in Georgetown.

The Cru was picked to finish third in the American Southwest Conference in the league's Preseason Poll. UMHB went 13-4-2 last season with a 9-1-1 record in conference play and advanced to the semifinals of the ASC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season under head coach Barry Elkins.

"We are working on blending the team these first few weeks to build for a conference run," Elkins said. "We lost seven starters from last year. Our roster is split with 15 returners and 15 newcomers but they are a talented bunch and I am excited to see them take the program to new heights."

Elkins returns three all-conference honorees from a season ago including NSCAA All-West Region selection Sarah Rempe and ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year Chelsea Graham. Rempe, a senior midfielder from Lewisville, Texas (Hebron H.S.), anchored UMHB's midfield in 2016, scoring three goals in 967 minutes of action. Graham, a sophomore from Pasadena, Texas (Deer Park H.S.), totaled seven goals in her freshman campaign, adding seven assists and netting one hat trick and one game-winning goal.

Madison Link also returns after earning all-conference honors last season. The junior defender from Tomball, Texas (Tomball H.S.), led a dominant UMHB defense last season that recorded 12 shutouts and set new school records in shutouts, goal-against average (0.62) and goals allowed (12). Elkins also returned a powerful offensive core in junior forward Caitlyn Shaughnessy and sophomore midfielder Taylor Marques. Shaughnessy, a native of Lampasas, Texas (Lampasas H.S.) and Georgetown, Texas native Marques (East View H.S.), combined for 11 goals, four assists and three game-winning goals in 2016.

The Cru opens the home slate on Friday, September 8th in a 2 p.m. match against Schreiner University at the UMHB Soccer Fields in Belton. UMHB opens conference play at LeTourneau University on Thursday, September 14th. Continuing coverage of the 2017 season is available at cruathletics.com
