Women’s Basketball earns 78-68 win over Concordia Texas

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 78-68 win over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 15-3 on the season and 8-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in league play.
 
The game opened with a 22-17 score after the first quarter with UMHB shoot 37.5 percent in that quarter. The Tornados took a 10-point lead with 6:20 left in the second quarter. UMHB then used a 13-0 run to gain a three-point advantage on Concordia. Meghan Turner was the leader in that streak, scoring nine points and hitting a three-point shot with 20 seconds left in the quarter to give UMHB its first lead in the contest.
 
The Cru held the Tornados scoreless through the first 1:30 of the third quarter before Concordia cut the lead to just two points. The Tornados tied the contest at 47 points with 2:59 in the third quarter but outscored Concordia 11-7 in the final minutes to take a 58-54 lead into the fourth quarter. UMHB did not trail again, finalizing the 78-68 win.
 
Hannah Holt led the Cru with 21 points, scoring 19 of those in the second half. Kendall Rollins followed that with 19 points while Turner added 15. Alicia Blackwell was the assists leader with seven while Turner added four and Brooke Elliott had three. Defensively, Rollins led the Cru with 14 boards while Ashley Caldwell added eight rebounds and six blocks.
 
Jaela Dejean led the Tornados with 20 points followed by Payton Berger with 13. Concordia shot 35.4 percent in the contest, 31.6 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. UMHB shot 39.7 percent in the contest, 21.1 percent in three pointers and 80 percent in foul shots.
 
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, January 25th in a 5:30 p.m. contest against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
