Men’s Soccer beats Southwestern 2-0, advances to NCAA Second Round

SAN ANTONIO, Texas   – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team beat Southwestern University 2-0 Saturday evening in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
 
Mathew Lay scored the unassisted game-winning goal for the Cru in the 18th minute of play. UMHB held a 1-0 lead at halftime and fought off an offensive surge from the Pirates early in the second half. Steven Dang scored an insurance goal for UMHB in the 72nd minute, heading in an assist from Rolando Nieto to give the Cru a two-goal advantage.
 
UMHB put six of its 17 shots on goal while Southwestern totaled 22 shots and 10 shots on goal. UMHB outshot the Pirates 11-9 in the first half and took four corner kicks in the match. Travis Aday earned the win in the net for UMHB, making 10 saves in the full 90-minute contest. Alan Carr took the loss for Southwestern, giving up two goals with four saves.
 
UMHB advances to the Second Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament and will face Trinity University in a 7 p.m. match on Sunday, November 11th. Southwestern ends its season at 12-6-3 while the Cru improves to 16-3-1.
