Volleyball beats Berry 3-1, advances to Third Round of NCAA Tournament

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.   – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team handed Berry College its first loss on their home court since 2016 Saturday with a 3-1 win over the Vikings. The victory came in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III National Championships.
 
UMHB used a 10-7 run to close out the first set and take a 25-22 win. The Vikings took the second set 25-15 before UMHB once again took a lead with a 25-17 win in the third. UMHB trailed early in the fourth but tied the set at 18. Berry pulled away to take a 24-20 lead but the Cru fought off three consecutive set points and tied the match at 24. UMHB sealed the victory with a 28-26 win in the fourth.
 
Jenna Gillean led the Cru with 17 kills while Sarah Paolini added 13. UMHB hit .141 in the match, powered by Miranda Klein with 41 assists. Defensively, Haleigh Evans led the Cru with 24 digs followed by Gillean with 15 and Klein with 10. Hope Hoelscher and Klein led UMHB's blocking defense as the Cru totaled seven team blocks. UMHB hit 47 kills on 156 attacks, adding 69 digs and seven service aces. Berry College hit .160 in the match with 50 kills on 156 total attacks, adding 70 digs and 13 team blocks.
 
UMHB advances to the Third Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament and will face the winner of Emory in a 2 p.m. (E.T.) match on Sunday, November 11th. Berry College ends their season at 26-4 while the Cru improved to 28-4.
