BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned two 3-1 wins in its opening day of the 2018 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. UMHB took 3-1 wins over McMurry and the University of Texas at Dallas to advance to the championship match.
UMHB took a 2-0 lead with 25-16, 26-17 set wins over McMurry. The War Hawks rallied for a 25-22 third set and held a six-point lead late in the fourth set. UMHB pulled within four before
Anja Zgarba served eight consecutive points to secure the 25-22 fourth-set win and 3-1 match victory.
Corinne Novak led the Cru with 23 kills while
Jenna Gillean added six and
Hope Hoelscher added 10.
Miranda Klein led the Cru with 59 assists in the match as UMHB hit .233 with 65 kills. Defensively,
Haleigh Evans and Gillean led the Cru with 18 digs while Zgarba added 17 and Klein had 14. Klein and
Sarah Paolini led the Cru with five blocks each while Hoelscher added four. UMHB totaled 63 assists, 81 digs and ten team blocks while the War Hawks hit .139 with 72 digs and 12 team blocks.
The Cru followed that with a hard-fought four-set win over the University of Texas at Dallas. UMHB took the first set 26-24 before falling 25-19 in the second. The Cru finished off the Comets with 25-23, 25-21 set wins for the 3-1 victory. Novak led the Cru with 18 kills while Gillean added 16. Klein anchored UMHB's offense with 48 assists as the Cru hit .203 in the match. Defensively, Evans led with 21 digs while Zgarba added 18. Paolini and Hoelscher led with four blocks each. UMHB totaled 58 digs, 108 digs and nine team blocks while the Comets had 63 kills, 102 digs and nine team blocks.
UMHB advances to the championship match of the 2018 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Tournament and will face the winner of Concordia University Texas and the University of Texas at Dallas at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 3rd in the Mayborn Campus Center.
