BELTON, Texas –The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team will open the 2018 season Friday in a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson.
 
UMHB returns 12 letter winners from a team that finished 26-16 overall last season. Outfielder Devon Walter, third baseman Dusti Douglas and pitcher Karen Tennis all return for their senior seasons with the Cru. Walter (Southlake, Carroll H.S.), was a Second Team All-ASC honoree last season and ranked second on the team in hits (54) and RBI (32). Tennis (League City, Bay Area Christian) was also a Second Team All-ASC selection, recording a 13-6 record with 12 complete games in the circle for UMHB. Douglas (Killeen, Ellison H.S.) also joined Tennis and Walter on the Spring Academic All-Conference Team.
 
Junior shortstop Makenzi Dawson and freshman outfielder Linsey Tomlinson also return after earning All-ASC honors in 2017. Dawson (Robinson, Robinson H.S) was named ASC Co-Newcomer of the Year last season and also earned First Team All-ASC honors. She batted .365 in her inaugural season with the Cru, opening the season with a 23-game hitting streak and setting a new program record for runs in a season with 49. Tomlinson (Huffman, Hargrave H.S.) was a Third Team All-ASC selection, hitting .330 with 29 hits and 24 runs in her freshman campaign. Additional returners include junior second baseman Kasi Cummings (Grandview, Grandview H.S.), junior utility player Kourtney Cummings (Grandview, Grandview H.S.), junior utility player Lizzie Bowne (Manchaca, Hays H.S.), sophomore utility player Whitney Flournoy (Huntington, Huntington H.S.), sophomore pitcher CeCe Darilek (Shiner, Shiner H.S.), sophomore infielder Avery Kelly (Georgetown, Georgetown H.S.) and sophomore infielder Connor O'Neal (Whitney, Whitney H.S.).
 
The 2018 roster welcomes four transfers and five freshman beginning their UMHB careers. Juniors Emily Bounds and Jessica Picou join UMHB as upperclassmen. Bounds (Moody, Moody H.S.), played two years of softball at Sam Houston State University while Picou (Trenton, Trenton H.S.), started her collegiate career at Crowder College. Sophomore pitchers Hannah Wolfe and Hannah Halepaska also join UMHB this season. Wolfe (Robinson, Robinson H.S.) opened her career at the University of Houston while Halepaska (Orange Grove, Orange Grove H.S.) played her freshman season at St. Edwards.  The 2018 freshman class includes two outfielders, two infielders and one pitcher. Logan Lowry (Forney, North Forney H.S.) and Ashley Estrada (Waco, University H.S.) are listed as outfielders while Jenna Calder (Salado, Salado H.S.) and Allie Dalle (Austin, Lake Travis H.S.) are infielders. Camryn Rucker (Elkhart, Elkhart H.S.) joins the team as a pitcher.
 
UMHB opens play at UT Dallas at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 9th. The Cru will open the 2018 home slate on Tuesday, February 13th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Southwestern University before hosting LeTourneau in the ASC opener February 16th and 17th.
