BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's softball team took home two wins in its season opener, beating No. 12 UT Dallas 8-4 and 6-4 in a pair of non-conference games. The wins opened UMHB at 2-0 on the season while the Comets opened at 0-2.
UMHB jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first game, thanks to a pair of two-RBI home runs from
Linsey Tomlinson and
Kasi Cummings. Tomlinson's home run scored
Devon Walter while
Kasi Cummings' home run scored twin sister Kourtney. The Cru added three more runs off single-run innings in the second, third and fourth for a 7-0 lead.
Whitney Flournoy scored in the second off an RBI from
Emily Bounds before
Dusti Douglas hit a home run in the top of the third.
Makenzi Dawson was next, reaching off an RBI single from
Devon Walter. UT Dallas found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with a home run from Ravin Wilson to cut UMHB's lead to 7-1.
Ashley Estrada was the final Crusader to score, finding home off an RBI double from Bounds in the top of the sixth. UT Dallas scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh, cutting UMHB's victory to 8-4.
Walter and Douglas led the Cru with three hits each while Dawson added two. Bounds, Tomlinson and
Kasi Cummings each drove in a team-high two runs while eight different Crusaders scored.
Hannah Halepaska earned the complete-game win for the Cru, pitching seven innings with seven hits and three earned runs allowed. UMHB totaled eight runs on 12 hits with three errors while the Comets had four runs on seven hits with four errors.
UT Dallas opened the second contests with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The Comets held that lead until the top of the fourth when
Avery Kelly and Douglas scored on errors. Walter followed that with a two-RBI home run, hitting in Bounds for a 4-2 Cru advantage. The Comets evened the contest in the bottom of that inning with runs from Stefanie Polderman and Nicole Peters. Douglas scored again in the top of the fifth when Kelly hit her in with a double to right center field. UMHB added one more in the sixth, leading 6-4 headed into the seventh.
Douglas led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders added one. Douglas was also the team-leader with two runs while Walter had two RBI.
Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching five innings with seven hits and four runs allowed. Darilek pitched in relief of Tennis, earning the save with two innings of work and just two hits allowed.
The Cru's first win notched Head Coach
Larry Hennig's 700
th career win. UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, February 13
th, opening the 2018 home schedule against Southwestern University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
