SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 2 Texas Lutheran Monday afternoon in Seguin. The Cru dropped a 9-1 decision to the Bulldogs before forcing TLU into extra innings, losing 5-4 in the ninth. UMHB fell to 11-6 on the day while the Bulldogs improved to 13-1.
Devon Walter opened the first game with an RBI double for the Cru, scoring
Linsey Tomlinson to give UMHB a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs evened the contest at 1 in the bottom of that inning after scoring on an error and took the lead in the second, scoring off an RBI fielder's choice. TLU did not trail again, putting up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three in the sixth to secure the 9-1 victory. Four Crusaders recorded hits in the contest while Tomlinson was the lone runner to score.
Karen Tennis took the loss for the Cru, pitching 4.1 innings with three hits and four runs allowed. Tennis struck out three and walked just two. Maitlin Raycroft earned the win for TLU, pitching a complete seven innings with four hits and one run allowed. UMHB totaled one run on four hits with two errors while the Bulldogs had nine runs on eight hits with one error.
Texas Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and added a pair of runs in the fourth to go up 2-0.
Makenzi Dawson responded for UMHB in the fifth, slamming a two-RBI single to score
Emily Bounds and
Whitney Flournoy to cut the Bulldogs lead to three. Kali Chatham scored for the Bulldogs off an RBI from Delani Sipila to lead the Cru 4-2 in the sixth. UMHB generated a game-tying offense in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs to tie the game at four.
Kasi Cummings doubled to left center field to score Flournoy before Dawson hit a sacrifice fly to score
Jessica Picou and tie the contest at four. The game remained knotted until the bottom of the ninth with Kassie Maddox singled to score Kyla Lockley and earn the 5-4 win. Bounds led the Cru with two hits while Flournoy scored a team-high two runs.
CeCe Darilek took the loss for for the Cru, pitching 3.2 innings with two runs and five hits allowed. Halepaska started for the Cru, pitching five innings with three runs and five hits allowed. Jordaine Bishop earned the win for the Bulldogs, pitching nine innings with three runs and six hits allowed. UMHB totaled four runs on six hits with one error while Texas Lutheran had five runs on 10 hits with one error.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 16
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Concordia University Texas at Dee Dillon Field in Belton. The Cru will conclude that series with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday, March 17
th.
