BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a midweek doubleheader with Trinity University Tuesday evening in Belton, earning 6-0 and 4-3 wins over the Tigers. UMHB improved to 8-4 after the sweep while the Tigers took their first losses of the 2018 season, falling to 6-2.
UMHB opened the first contest with a pair of one-run innings, scoring off sacrifice flies from
Devon Walter and
Kasi Cummings for a 2-0 lead after two. The Cru extended that lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Emily Bounds opened the inning with a double then scored off an RBI double from
Dusti Douglas. Douglas scored next off an RBI single from
Kasi Cummings before
Makenzi Dawson hit the inning's second RBI double to score Cummings. UMHB added one more run in the bottom of the sixth when
Logan Lowry scored off an RBI double from
Kasi Cummings, giving the Cru a 6-0 win. Dawson, Douglas and
Kasi Cummings led the Cru with two hits each while six different Crusaders scored runs.
Kasi Cummings was the RBI leader with three while Douglas, Walter and Dawson each added one.
Hannah Halepaska earned the shutout win in the circle for UMHB, pitching a complete seven innings with just three hits allowed. Allie Holbrook took the loss for the Tigers, surrendering five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. UMHB totaled six runs on nine hits with no errors while the Tigers had no runs on three hits with no errors.
Linsey Tomlinson opened the second game with a home run in the top of the first inning to put the Cru up 1-0. The Tigers evened the contest in the top of the fourth when Danielle Ruiz hit an RBI single to score Rebecca Berreth. UMHB responded in the bottom of that inning, scoring three runs.

Kourtney Cummings hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Kelly and Douglas to put the Cru up 4-1. Trinity added one more run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to just one run but fell 4-3 to the Cru. Four different Crusaders recorded hits and runs for UMHB while
Kourtney Cummings had a team-high two RBI.
Karen Tennis earned the win for UMHB, pitching a complete seven innings with eight hits and three runs allowed. Adrienne Edwards took the loss for the Tigers, allowing four runs and four hits in six innings of work. UMHB totaled four runs on four hits with three errors while the Tigers had three runs on eight hits.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 9
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at McMurry University in Abilene. The Cru will finish that series with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday, March 10
th before travelling to Texas Lutheran University on Monday, March 12
th.
