Game Notes
BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will open American Southwest Conference play and look to build on the momentum of a big week one victory when the Cru travels to Alpine to face Sul Ross State on Saturday. UMHB is 1-0 on the season after beating Albright 91-7 last week. The Lobos (0-1) had an open week after falling to NAIA program Arizona Christian 42-20 on September 1
st.
UMHB set new ASC records for touchdowns, points and margin of victory in that game and the Cru also tied the conference record with nine rushing touchdowns. The Cru extended its regular season winning streak to 23 consecutive games with that victory and now UMHB will face a Sul Ross program it has beaten in all 20 of the previous meetings between the two teams. But the Cru coaching staff is cautioning the players not to read too much into the first week's results or the series history with the Lobos.
"We were able to overcome some breakdowns on both sides of the ball against Albright," UMHB Head Coach
Pete Fredenburg said. "We have to work on that. We embrace and enjoy the victory, but this program has bigger ambitions than just winning one game against Albright. So we have some work to do and I expect to see improvement in several areas this week."
Sul Ross State will be playing at home for the first time this season on Saturday. This will also be the first time the two teams have played a night game in Alpine. When you add that to another long road trip and the extra week of preparation for the Lobos, there are some concerns for the Cru.
"Anytime you go to Alpine, it brings back memories of some of the trips and strange things we have had happen out there," Fredenburg said. "They are a different team at night. It is the conference opener and they will certainly be fired up to play us. We know this game will be a big challenge for us."
The game will be the second of a three-game stretch of road contests to open the season for UMHB. Defensive coordinator
Larry Harmon will also serve as acting head coach for the second straight game for the Cru.
The game kicks off at 6 pm and will be broadcast on KRock 101.7 FM with the pre-game show starting at 5:30 pm. UMHB will also provide a live video stream and Sul Ross State will provide live statistics from the game.
