GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team earned its first road win of the 2019-2020 season with a 75-68 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon in Greensboro.
The Bishops jumped to a quick five-point lead in the first half before UMHB scored 21 straight points to take a 16-point advantage.
Devyn Brewton and
Salomon Smith each scored six points during the run with
Casey Armour adding four. The Bishops fought back but
Byrale Carter hit a pair of free throws to give the Cru another double-digit advantage which UMHB held at halftime with a 38-25 lead. North Carolina Wesleyan cut the lead to just four points halfway through the second half. Carter hit two more free throws followed by three-pointer from
Logan Hicks and a layup from Armour to put the Cru up by nine. UMHB's lead fluctuated through the rest of the second half, never leading by fewer than five points and sealing the 75-68 win.
Carter led the Cru with 22 points while Armour added 14 and
Sam Moore had 11. UMHB shot 39.7 percent in the contest with a 31.6 percent showing from beyond the arc and a 71.9 percent performance from the free-throw line. Carter was also UMHB's leader with eight rebounds as the Cru brought down 34 in the contest. Defensively, UMHB forced the Bishops into 17 turnovers with nine steals. UMHB committed just six turnovers.
North Carolina Wesleyan shot 43.3 percent in the game with a 60 percent showing in penalty shots. A.J. Frye led the Bishops with 18 points followed by Josh Covington with 17.
