BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team beat Concordia Texas 66-61 in the American Southwest Conference West Division opener Tuesday evening in Belton.
UMHB jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter, holding the Tornados scoreless through the first 4:31 of action. The Cru led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter and sustained a lead through the first half, going into halftime up 38-31. The Tornados rallied late in the third, cutting UMHB's lead from 14 points to just four before taking their first lead of the contest at the 7:27 mark in the fourth.
Madison McCoy responded, hitting a three-pointer to put the Cru by two.
Hannah Holt sunk a shot just outside the paint and
Kasey Jo Hinton made a three-pointer to extend UMHB's lead to seven. Concordia Texas responded with a 7-0 run to tie the contest at 61-61 with 1:27 left in the contest.
Allaira Jones hit a free throw to give UMHB a one-point lead with 1:01 left to play. Holt distanced the Cru with a pair of free throws before capitalizing on a steal by
Bethany McLeod with a lay-in to secure UMHB's 66-61 victory.
Holt led the Cru with 19 points followed by Jones with 11 and McCoy with 10. UMHB shot 35.1 percent from the field with
Alicia Blackwell recording a team-high five assists. Holt was UMHB's leading rebounder with 11, followed by Jones with nine. The Cru forced Concordia Texas into 24 turnovers, recording 11 steals.
Kennedy Donovan led the Tornados with 14 points while Payton Berger added 11. Concordia Texas shot 39.7 percent in the contest with a 36.0 percentage from beyond the arc and a 60.0 showing in foul shots. UMHB shot 26.7 percent in three-pointers and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line, out-rebounding the Tornados 49-37.
