GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team took control of the game early in the second half as the Cru rolled to a 75-69 victory over Southwestern University Thursday night in Georgetown. UMHB improves to 4-1 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 1-2 on the year.
The Cru trailed by six points at halftime, but opened the second half with a 21-4 run. That would give UMHB an 11-point lead with 12:29 remaining in the game. The Pirates would close to within five points, but
Logan Hicks wrapped three-pointers around a Southwestern basket to push the Cru lead out to 12 points with 6:01 left to play. Southwestern would not get closer than five points the rest of the way as UMHB iced the game with clutch free throws down the stretch. The Cru also shot 50 percent from the field in the second half. UMHB's only leads of the first half came at 2-0 and 12-11 as Southwestern built a 35-29 lead at the break.
Sam Moore led UMHB with 19 points and he added ten rebounds.
Salomon Smith had 14 points and a game-high 13 boards for the Cru.
Logan Hicks added 14 points,
Devyn Brewton scored 12 and
Casey Armour chipped in 11 more for UMHB. The Cru shot 45 percent from the field and went 18-26 from the free-throw line. UMHB out rebounded the Pirates 37-28 on the night and scored 12 points off 13 Southwestern turnovers.
Luke Hicks led the Pirates with 18 points and he was 4-9 on three-pointers. Zac Black scored 14 points and Kyle Howard added 13. Southwestern shot 41 percent from the field on the night and hit 7-28 from beyond the arc. The Pirates were just 2-9 from long-range in the second half.
The Cru men will return to action with a home game against Trinity University on November 30
th. The start time for that game is to be determined based on the result of UMHB's home football game this Saturday.
