Game Notes
BELTON, Texas – For the second time in three weeks, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team is hosting a matchup of nationally-ranked opponents as the Cru welcomes Texas Lutheran to town Saturday. The American Southwest Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships will also be on the line.
The Cru improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in ASC play with an 82-0 victory at Louisiana College last Saturday. UMHB held its 28
th consecutive opponent under 20 points as the defense recorded its third shutout of the season. The Cru has won at least a share of 14 consecutive conference championships and can extend that with a victory over the Bulldogs. Texas Lutheran brings a 7-1 overall record and a 7-0 mark in conference play into Saturday's game and TLU has won seven in a row after falling to Hendrix College 26-23 in the season opener. The Bulldogs are looking for their first ASC title, but did win three straight conference championships as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Saturday's winner clinches the league's automatic berth in the postseason and will also guarantee itself at least a share of the conference title.
"They do a great job and have so many people back from last year," UMHB Head Coach
Pete Fredenburg said. "They are so well coached. They execute their offense and defense very well and create problems for you on both sides of the ball. It is going to be a fun game against a really good opponent. We've always had great respect for Texas Lutheran and the job they do."
Both teams are in their 22
nd season of football in 2019. UMHB started its program in 1998 and TLU brought the sport back after a short break that season. The Cru leads the all-time series 20-1, including a 27-20 victory in the First Round of the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships.
UMHB extended its overall winning streak to 23 straight games with last Saturday's win over the Wildcats. The Cru has also won 40 consecutive regular season contests, 34 straight ASC games and 67 regular season home games in a row going into this week's game against the Bulldogs.
UMHB will be observing Military Appreciation Day during Saturday's game. There will be a static display of military vehicles and equipment on King Street prior to kickoff. Military personnel will also participate in events at the game in a variety of roles, including a mass reenlistment ceremony at halftime. Active duty military and their families will receive free admission to the game with their military ID.
