MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team grabbed control of the game in the second quarter and the Cru rolled to a 78-60 victory over Rhodes College Sunday afternoon in Memphis. UMHB improves to 7-1 on the season by completing a sweep of two games with Rhodes. The loss drops the Lynx to 4-5 on the year.
The Cru trailed 5-2 early in the game, but closed the opening quarter with a 12-4 run to build a 14-9 lead. UMHB took the lead into double figures with 3:14 left in the second period and held a 36-19 advantage at halftime. The lead would grow to as many as 25 points in the second half as the sixth-ranked Cru cruised to its seventh straight win.
Hannah Holt led UMHB with 21 points on 7-14 shooting from the field. Holt also grabbed five rebounds.
Allaira Jones had a double-double for the Cru with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Eight other players scored for UMHB in a balanced attack as the team shot 59 percent from the field in the second half. The Cru finished at 42 percent shooting for the game and went 15-21 from the free-throw line. UMHB forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 19 points in the victory.
Alli Mayeux topped the Lynx with 20 points and Libby Long and Caroline Taylor chipped in 11 points apiece. Rhodes shot 33 percent from the field as a team and hit 9-23 from three-point range on the day.
The game was the last for the UMHB women before the Christmas break. The Cru will return to action with a home game against nationally-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on December 28
th. That game is slated for a 7 pm start at the Mayborn Campus Center.
