Men's Basketball tops Concordia in conference opener

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team withstood Concordia's second-half surge and the Cru pulled away late for a 102-93 victory over the Tornados Monday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops Concordia to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the ASC.
 
The Cru jumped out to a 19-point lead with 5:52 left in the opening half, but the Tornados battled back to cut the lead to 48-43 at the half. Concordia would take a 53-52 lead early in the second half and held a nine-point edge as late as 10:02 mark. UMHB scored nine straight points, and tied the game at 81 on Sam Moore's jumper with 7:40 remaining. Aedan Welch and Casey Armour added baskets to put the Cru up 85-81. Concordia got back to within two points on the next possession, but UMHB answered. The game would never get closer than three points down the stretch as the Cru iced it with clutch free-throw shooting.
 
Moore hit 9-14 from the field and went 13-14 from the stripe to hit a game-high 35 points. He added six assists and eight rebounds. Armour scored 27 points, Logan Hicks had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Devyn Brewton chipped in 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds before fouling out. The Cru shot 59 percent in the second half and finished at 57 percent for the game. UMHB outrebounded Concordia 47-37 to help overcome 26 turnovers.
 
Philip Meikle and Zaid Harris had 16 points apiece for the Tornados and five players scored in double figures. Concordia was 10-28 from three-point range and shot 44 percent overall as a team. There were 51 total fouls and six technical fouls called in a game that took nearly two hours to complete.
 
The game was the final contest for the Cru before the Christmas break. UMHB will return to action with the two-day, four-team Cru Classic on December 27-28th. Games will be played at 3 pm and 5 pm each day. The Cru's opening game will be a 5 pm start against Whitman College on the 27th. LeTourneau University and Wisconsin-Platteville are the other two teams playing in the tournament.
