BELTON, Texas –
Sam Moore buried an acrobatic jumper with 2.8 seconds left to play as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team topped 9
th-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville 74-72 Saturday evening in Belton. The Cru improves to 9-1 on the season with its ninth consecutive victory. The loss snaps the Pioneers 10-game winning streak and drops UWP to 10-1 on the year.
Wisconsin-Platteville opened up its largest lead of the game at 70-65 with 2:25 remaining in the game.
Logan Hicks hit a jumper and
Pat Everett made a free-throw before Moore tied the game at 70 with a jumper with 54 seconds left. Hicks added two free-throws, but had a third wiped out on a lane violation with 22 seconds to play. Quentin Shields hit a runner at the other end to tie it up at 72 with nine seconds on the clock, before Moore hit his go-ahead jumper. Carter Voelker's desperation three from near midcourt was off the mark at the buzzer as the Cru held on for the win. UMHB led 40-33 after a first half that featured 12 lead changes and two ties.
Moore led all scorers with 24 points and he added eight rebounds and five assists. Hicks hit 5-9 from three-point range and finished with 22 points for the Cru.
Casey Armour also reached double figures with 14 points. UMHB shot 45 percent from the field for the game and hit 6-19 from three-point range. The Cru went 16-26 from the free-throw line.
Justin Stovall led four players in double digits for the Pioneers with 18 points and he added eight rebounds. Shields had 14 points and Kyle Tuma and Voelker scored 12 points apiece. UWP shot 37 percent as a team and was 8-33 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle 47-39 but committed 16 turnovers on the night.
The Cru returns to action with a return to American Southwest Conference play next week. The UMHB men will host University of the Ozarks for a 7:30 pm start next Thursday before taking on UT Dallas in a 3 pm home game next Saturday.
