GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team battled back from an early deficit to tie the game, but the Cru could not muster a second comeback in a 6-4 loss to Hendrix College Sunday in Grand Prairie. UMHB falls to 0-3 on the season with the loss. The Warriors move to 2-1 on the year with the victory.
Hendrix used back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A run-scoring wild pitch stretched it to 3-0 in the bottom of the second. The Cru answered with a three-run rally in the top of the third inning.
Malek Bolin's sacrifice fly drove in the first run,
Hunter McQuary doubled home the second and
Jack Herbert singled home McQuary to tie the game at 3-3. The Warriors scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead and Andrei Stoya's solo home run in the seventh pushed the lead to 6-3. The Cru left two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings before another McQuary RBI double cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the ninth. UMHB went down in order from there to end the game.
McQuary, Bolin, Herbert and
Landon Dieterich all had two hits apiece for UMHB to lead an 11-hit attack.
Dalton Harned took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 on the season. Bryce Delay earned the victory for the Warriors to improve to 1-0 and Taylor Barke notched his first save of the year. Sean Dehne had three of Hendrix's nine hits in the contest.
The Cru will continue its season-opening road swing with a three-game series at Schreiner University next weekend. The two teams will face off in a single game on Friday before closing out the series with a Saturday doubleheader in Kerrville.
