Softball drops doubleheader to UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a doubleheader to UT Tyler Saturday afternoon in Tyler, falling 7-1 and 10-4 to the Patriots. UMHB moved to 10-11 on the day while the Patriots improved to 17-2.
 
UT Tyler jumped to a lead early in the first contest, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame with an RBI double from Theresa Gonzales and a two-RBI single from Lynsey Mitchell. The Patriots added two more runs in the bottom the next inning off back-to-back RBI singles from Victoria Gonzales and Ashley Perez. UMHB got on the board in the top of the third frame when Hannah Wolfe scored Milly Cesare with an RBI single. Theresa Gonzales batted in two more runs for the Patriots in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-RBI double, giving UT Tyler a 7-1 advantage. Neither team was able to score again, securing the 7-1 win for the Patriots. Six Crusaders recorded hits while Cesare scored the Cru's run and Wolfe had the team's lone RBI. Kathryn Reed took the loss for the Cru, pitching 1.1 innings with six hits and five runs allowed. Reed gave up two earned runs and struck out three batters. Camryn Rucker pitched in relief, throwing 4.2 innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Miranda Leal earned the win for the Patriots, throwing 4.1 innings with just two hits allowed. UMHB totaled one run on six hits with two errors while the Patriots had seven runs on 11 hits with no errors.
 
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the second contest, scoring two runs off an RBI double from Perez in the bottom of the first frame. UTT added two more runs off a home run from Nicole Garcia in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. UMHB responded in the top of the third when Jacqueline Kay hit a two-RBI home run to cut the Patriots' lead to 4-2.UT Tyler tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off RBI from Victoria Gonzales and Perez. UMHB used an offensive surge in the sixth inning to cut the Patriots' lead to three runs with a home run from Kasi Cummings and RBI double from Allie Dalle. UT Tyler pulled away in the bottom of that frame, scoring four runs off four hits to take a six-run lead. UMHB saw one base runner in the top of the seventh but was unable to score, surrendering the 10-4 win to the Patriots. Kasi Cummings led the Cru with two hits while Kay had two RBI and four different Crusaders scored runs. Bayleigh Grogan took the loss for the Cru, pitching six innings with 12 hits and 10 runs allowed. Whitney Romero earned the win for the Patriots, throwing 5.2 innings with six hits and four urns allowed while Leal earned the save, throwing 1.1 innings with just one hit allowed. UMHB totaled four runs on seven hits with one error while UT Tyler had 10 runs on 12 hits with one error.
 
 
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 22nd in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against McMurry University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
