Softball sweeps doubleheader with Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept opening day of its three-game series with Concordia University Texas Friday evening in Austin, earning 4-2 and 2-0 wins over the Tornados. UMHB improved to 14-12 on the day and 11-6 in conference play while the Tornados fell to 10-14 overall and 5-9 in league play. 
 
UMHB took an early lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the second inning. Jacqueline Kay doubled to score Alexis Galvan, then scored a run of her own later in the inning for a 2-0 UMHB lead. Galvan batted in another run for the Cru in the third inning, scoring Kourtney Cummings with an RBI single. Concordia Texas responded with back-to-back single-run frames in the third and fourth innings to cut UMHB's lead to two. Avery Kelly tacked on another run for the Cru in the top of the fifth inning, reaching on an RBI single from Kourtney Cummings for a 4-2 UMHB lead. UMHB did not allow the Tornados another run, securing the 4-2 win. Alexis Galvan led the Cru with three hits while Kourtney Cummings added two. Four Crusaders combined for runs with three recording RBI. Bayleigh Grogan earned the win in the circle, throwing seven innings with two runs and eight hits allowed. Grogan struck out three and did not walk a single batter. UMHB totaled four runs on nine hits with no errors while the Tornados had two runs on eight hits with two errors. 
Emily Bounds gave the Cru a lead in the second game, slamming a two-RBI single to score Milly Cesare and Kasi Cummings for a 2-0 lead. Neither team was able to score again, securing the 2-0 win for UMHB. Bounds led the Cru with two hits and two RBI. Kathryn Reed earned the win in the circle for UMHB, throwing seven shutout innings. Reed struck out eight batters, allowing just three hits with one walk. UMHB totaled two runs on eight hits while the Tornados had three hits with one error. 

UMHB returns to action on Saturday, March 30th in a 12 p.m. single game against the Tornados in Austin.
