Softball splits doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a Friday evening doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons University, taking a 2-0 loss to the Cowgirls before earning a 4-0 win. UMHB moved to 6-9 on the season and 6-5 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Cowgirls went to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in league play.   
 
UMHB and the Cowgirls opened the series trading back-to-back scoreless innings in the first and second frames. Hardin-Simmons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Karis Hessert hit an RBI single to score Gabby Ortega. Ortega scored again for the Cowgirls in the top of the next frame, hitting a homerun to put Hardin-Simmons up 2-0. UMHB recorded three hits in the six and seventh innings but was unable to score a base runner, ending the game with a 2-0 loss to the Cowgirls. Four Crusaders combined for hits in the contest while Ortega and Karis Hessert led the Cowgirls with two hits each. CeCe Darilek took the loss for UMHB, surrendering one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Bayleigh Grogan pitched the final five innings for UMHB, allowing four hits with one run and five strikeouts. UMHB totaled four hits while the Cowgirls had two runs on seven hits.
 
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Kasi Cummings scored off an RBI single from Milly Cesare. Cummings struck again in the bottom of the next frame, slamming a two-RBI double to score Allie Dalle. Milly Cesare followed that, tacking on two more runs with a two-RBI double, extending UMHB's lead to four runs. Kat Reed took the Cowgirls in three consecutive outs in the top of the seventh, securing her complete-game win. Reed threw all seven innings with one hit allowed and eight strikeouts. Cesare led the Cru with three hits while Kasi Cummings added two hits and two runs. Rhyan Voss took the loss for Hardin-Simmons, surrendering one hit and one run in 1.2 innings of work. UMHB totaled four runs on eight hits while the Cowgirls had one run and one error.   
 
UMHB returns to action tomorrow in a 12 p.m. contest against the Cowgirls at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
