BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader with Sul Ross State University Thursday afternoon in Belton. UMHB edged the Lobos 4-3 in a 10-inning opening contest before taking a 3-1 win in the second game. UMHB improved to 19-14 on the season and 14-6 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Lobos fell to 16-17 overall and 10-12 in league play.
Alexis Galvan gave UMHB a lead in the first contest, slamming a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to score
Allie Dalle and
Emily Bounds. Payslee Sims responded for the Lobos in the top of the next frame, hitting a solo home run to cut UMHB's lead to just one run.
Ashley Estrada tacked on another run for the Cru in the bottom of the second inning, scoring off an RBI from
Milly Cesare. Abby Alvarado evened the contest at three runs each in the top of the fourth frame with a two-RBI home run to centerfield. The game stayed knotted through the regulation seven frames, sending the contest into extra innings.
Kasi Cummings finally sealed the win for the Cru, slamming an RBI double in the bottom of the tenth inning to score
Jessi Ives for the 4-3 win. Kat Reed opened the game in the circle for UMHB, throwing 3.1 innings with two hits and three runs allowed.
Jacqueline Kay pitched in relief, giving up just three hits in 6.2 shutout innings of work. Kay struck out two batters to earn her second collegiate win. Jodie Vaughn took the loss for Sul Ross, pitching the full 9.1 innings with seven hits and four runs allowed.
Ashley Estrada led the Cru with two hits while five other Crusaders added one. Galvan led the team with two RBI while four Crusaders combined for runs. UMHB totaled four runs on seven hits with no errors while Sul Ross had three runs on five hits with two errors.
Mary Villarreal gave Sul Ross a lead in the second contest, opening the second inning with a solo home run to center field to put the Lobos up 1-0. Dalle evened the contest in the bottom of the third, scoring off an RBI single from
Kourtney Cummings for a 1-1 tie. UMHB used a two-run fifth inning to gain advantage on the Lobos with
Kasi Cummings and
Kourtney Cummings both scoring on errors.
Bayleigh Grogan followed that with back-to-back shutout innings to secure the 3-1 win.
Kasi Cummings and
Hannah Wolfe led the Cru with two hits each while
Kourtney Cummings had the lone RBI. Grogan earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching seven innings with six hits and one run allowed. Kyndall Dove took the loss for the Lobos, throwing six innings with seven hits and three runs allowed. UMHB totaled three runs on seven this with one error while Sul Ross had one run on six hits with five errors.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, April 12
th in a 2 p.m. single game against Sul Ross State University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
