SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team battled back to tie the game twice, but Trinity was able to pull away late as the 6
th-ranked Tigers topped the Cru 13-7 Tuesday night in San Antonio. UMHB falls to 9-21 on the season with the loss. Trinity improves to 27-9 on the year with the victory.
Trinity jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and single runs in the second and third innings. UMHB put four runs on the board in the top of fourth to tie the game at four.
Caimyn Holiday singled home the first Cru run,
Landon Dieterich added a two-run single and
Jackson Godoy scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Dalys Binder's two-run single gave Trinity a 6-4 lead in the bottom of that inning before UMHB battled back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Hunter McQuary singled home a run and
Jacob Dellipoali scored on another wild pitch to make it 6-6. The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, added a single run in the sixth and scored two more in the seventh inning to make it a 12-6 Tiger lead. UMHB put two runners on base in the top of the eighth, but a double play ended the Cru scoring threat. A solo home run stretched the Trinity lead to 13-6 in the bottom of the eighth.
Malek Bolin led off the top of the ninth with a homer to cut the gap to 13-7, but that was as close as UMHB would get on the night.
Dieterich, McQuary and Dellipoali led the Cru offense with two hits apiece. Dieterich also drove in two runs as UMHB finished with 11 hits on the night.
Harrison Sims took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Mason Meredith topped Trinity with four hits and Michael Goodrich added three hits and two RBI. The Tigers had 17 hits as a team. Ian Hussian earned the win for Trinity to raise his record to 4-3 on the season.
The Cru returns to action with a three-game American Southwest Conference series at East Texas Baptist later this week. The two teams open that series with a 7 pm single game Thursday night in Marshall.
