SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead and then held off a late Texas Lutheran rally as the Cru posted a 5-4 victory over the 6
th-ranked Bulldogs Tuesday night in Seguin. UMHB improves to 10-24 on the season with the win. The loss drops TLU to 27-9 on the year.
UMHB jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Jack Herbert singled home two runs to open the scoring and
Caimyn Holiday added a two-run double. The Bulldogs cut it to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Mitch Patterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to give the Cru a 5-2 lead. TLU closed to within 5-3 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of that inning. It would stay that way into the bottom of the ninth. Two costly UMHB errors allowed a run to score to close the gap to 5-4. The Bulldogs put the tying run on second base, but
Jeb Zolman coaxed a popout to end the game and notch his first save of the season.
Herbert and Holiday had two hits apiece for the Cru, who were held to six hits on the night.
Andrew Hutchings earned the win for UMHB to raise his record to 3-1 on the year. Chase Cutler took the loss for TLU to drop to 1-1 on the year. The Bulldogs also managed just six hits as a team and no player had more than one hit for Texas Lutheran.
The Cru will now return home to close out the season with a three-game American Southwest Conference series against Concordia Texas. The two teams will open that series with a 7 pm single game at Red Murff Field on Thursday.
