Football to close out home stand against Howard Payne

Game Notes

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will close out its three-game season-opening home stand by hosting Howard Payne University this Saturday. The two teams will face off in a 6 pm kickoff at Crusader Stadium in the final night game of the regular season for the Cru.

UMHB improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play on the season with a 23-13 victory over Belhaven University last Saturday. The Cru is also ranked #1 in the country by both the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com. But despite the undefeated record and high national rankings, UMHB will be looking for major improvement over that performance as a young team continues to progress toward meeting the always high expectations for a program that had won two of the last three NCAA Division III National Championships.

"Our players know what the expectations are for this program, both inside and outside of the program," UMHB Head Coach Pete Fredenburg said. "We need to develop some confidence and see some guys make big plays. We are still very much a work in progress and we have to develop guys who can be good teammates and make the kind of sacrifices necessary to get to where we want this program to go."

UMHB extended its overall winning streak to 17 straight games with last Saturday's win over the Blazers. The Cru has also won 34 consecutive regular season contests, 28 straight ASC games and 63 regular season home games in a row going into this week's game against the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in ASC play on the season and the Yellow Jackets also received a vote in the AFCA Top 25 Poll this week. HPU ranks among the conference leaders in scoring and total offense per game this season and the Yellow Jackets have already matched their win total of the previous two seasons combined this year. Former UMHB player and assistant coach Braxton Harris is in his third season as the head coach at Howard Payne.
