Women's Basketball opens ASC Tournament play on Thursday

BELTON, Texas – Fresh off wrapping up its third consecutive American Southwest Conference West Division title, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team will now turn its attention towards the program's first conference championship. The Cru will look to take the next step toward that elusive crown when UMHB opens ASC Championship Tournament play on Thursday.
 
The Cru is the #1 seed from the West Division and will take on East Division #4 seed Belhaven University in a 2:30 pm Quarterfinal Game to open the tournament. UMHB finished the regular season at 21-4 overall and went 14-2 in ASC play. The Blazers are 14-11 overall and posted a 7-9 mark in conference action. The Cru is making its 16th consecutive appearance in the ASC Tournament and has advanced to the Championship Game five times, including each of the last two years. Belhaven will be playing in the ASC Tournament for the first time in program history. UMHB won the regular season meeting between the two teams 76-54 in Jackson, Mississippi in January. Hannah Holt had 27 points in that game and Allaira Jones added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Cru. On the season, Holt leads UMHB in scoring at 16.4 points per game. Kendall Rollins is averaging 11.9 points and Jones is scoring 11.2 points and pulling down a team-best 7.5 rebounds per contest. Peyton Papenburg leads Belhaven at 18.3 points per game and Keke Lyles is scoring 17.6 points a game. That duo has also combined to hit 106 three-pointers on the season.
 
The UMHB-Belhaven winner will advance to face the winner of the East Texas Baptist/Howard Payne Quarterfinal game in a 5 pm Semifinal on Friday. On the other side of the bracket, LeTourneau and Hardin-Simmons face off in one Quarterfinal with Concordia Texas taking on tournament host UT Dallas in the other. Those two winners will meet in a 7:30 pm Semifinal on Friday. The ASC Tournament Championship Game will be played at 6 pm on Saturday with the winner claiming the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
