Softball splits doubleheader at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a doubleheader with Belhaven University Friday afternoon in Jackson, falling 12-4 to the Blazers before taking an 8-5 win. UMHB moved to 7-2 on the day and 4-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Blazers went to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
 
Belhaven jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before UMHB got on the board with an RBI single from Lexi Harris. The Blazers exploded in the second inning, putting up six more runs for a 9-1 lead. Hannah Wolfe responded in the top of the third inning, slamming a three-RBI home run to cut the lead Blazers' lead to five. Belhaven added one more run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to secure the 12-4 win.  Wolfe and Milly Cesare led the Cru with two hits each while Wolfe had a team-high three RBI and two runs. Kat Reed took the loss for the Cru, pitching 1.1 innings with five hits and four runs allowed. CeCe Darilek and Kami Flores both pitched in relief. Darilek allowed five hits and five runs while Flores went three innings with four hits and three runs allowed. Bailey Root earned the win for the Blazers, surrendering seven hits and four runs. UMHB had four runs on seven hits with one error while the Blazers had 12 runs on 14 hits with one error.
 
The Cru opened the second contest with a four-run lead. Hannah Wolfe hit an RBI single to score Avery Kelly before Kelly and Korbyn Bassett hit back-to-back RBI singles. Wolfe hit in Kelly once again with an RBI double, putting UMHB up 4-0 in the second. Belhaven responded in the bottom of that frame, scoring five runs off five hits to take a one-run lead. Bassett sealed the win for the Cru in the fourth inning, slamming a three-RBI home run to give UMHB the 8-5 win. Bassett led the Cru with four hits and four RB I while Kelly scored a team-high three runs. Bayleigh Grogan earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching seven innings with eight hits and five runs allowed. Dallas Blaker took the loss for Belhaven, throwing 1.1 innings with seven hits and four runs allowed. UMHB totaled eight runs on 13 hits with no errors while the Blazers had five runs on eight hits with two errors.
 
UMHB closes the series with a 12 p.m. single game tomorrow against the Blazers.
