Men's Basketball edged by Sul Ross State

BELTON, Texas – In a back-and-forth game, Sul Ross State had one more run and hit clutch free throws as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team dropped another tight game, falling to the Lobos 93-89 Thursday in Belton. The Cru drops to 12-8 overall and 4-7 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. Sul Ross improves to 12-8 overall and 9-2 in the ASC with the victory.
 
Sul Ross led 47-46 at halftime despite UMHB shooting 59 percent from the field as a team in the opening half. The Cru scored the first six points of the second half to grab the lead back, but the two teams kept trading the lead throughout the final 20 minutes. The Lobos would be up by six with 1:36 left to play, but Casey Armour scored four straight points to pull UMHB to within 88-86 with 53 seconds to go. B.J. Hollis hit a jumper for the Lobos on the next possession and broke free for a dunk after a Cru miss to push the lead back to six. Joseph Mitchell's three-pointer made it a three-point game with 10 seconds left, but Hollis hit a key free-throw with seven seconds on the clock to make it a two-possession game and UMHB could not answer.
 
There were 21 lead changes and seven ties in the game. The Cru's largest lead came at nine points late in the first half before the Lobos made a run. The biggest lead of the night for Sul Ross was six points.
 
Sam Moore led UMHB with 25 points. Logan Hicks added 18 points, 10 assists and a team-high nine boards, Armour finished with 14 points despite early foul trouble and Mitchell chipped in 10 points. The Cru shot 51 percent as a team for the game, but were just 7-24 from three-point range. UMHB was 1-9 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Cru hit 10-13 from the free-throw line on the night.
 
Tristen Licon hit 6-10 three-pointers and led all scorers with 33 points for the Lobos. He also had five assists and five rebounds. Hollis and Cailen Bond scored 18 points apiece and Logan Dixon added 13. Jake Lopez recorded 10 assists and Hollis grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Sul Ross shot 47 percent as a team and was 12-37 from long distance. The Lobos also out rebounded UMHB 41-36 on the night.
 
The Cru men will close out the home schedule with another key ASC West Division game on Saturday. UMHB will host Howard Payne University for a 3 pm start at the Mayborn Campus Center.
