BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball ream broke open a tie game in the final four innings and posted an 8-5 win over UT Dallas in non-conference action Tuesday in Belton. The Cru improves to 6-8 on the season with the win while the loss drops the Comets to 11-5 on the year.
UTD took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but UMHB tied it on
Jeb Zolman's two-run double in the bottom of that frame.
Landon Dieterich's solo homer put the Cru up 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Zolman tripled home a run and scored on
Brandon Madden's RBI single in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 UMHB lead. UTD tied it up with a three-run fourth inning before UMHB scored the game's final three runs. Madden singled home Zolman with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth,
Hunter McQuary scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh and
Dawson Shibley scored an insurance run on another Comet error in the bottom of the eighth.
Zolman had three extra-base hits and three RBI to lead the UMHB offense. McQuary also had three hits for the Cru.
Cooper Nelson (1-1) picked up the win with five and a third innings of scoreless relief work. Connor Allred had three hits for UT Dallas and three other players had two hits apiece. Jarrett Johnson took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season.
The Cru will host Blackburn College for a 6 pm non-conference game on Wednesday. UMHB will then welcome East Texas Baptist to Red Murff Field for a three-game American Southwest Conference series on Friday and Saturday.
