ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's tennis team closed out its first tournament of the fall season with the final day of play at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational Saturday in Abilene..
In flight "A" singles, UMHB's
Victoria Rendon lost in the consolation bracket championship match. Rendon dropped a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 12-10 decision to Lexie Nave of Howard Payne University.
In flight "B" singles,
Katy Beach won the consolation championship by topping teammate
Sofia Sanchez. Beach posted a 6-2, 6-3 win in that match.
In flight "C" singles, the Cru's
Sydney Andersen and
Sierra Layne met in the consolation title match. Andersen won the bracket after beating Layne 6-3, 6-1.
In flight "A" doubles,
Chloe Norris and Rendon met Landry Laywell and Priscilla Schimming of HSU in a Semifinal match. Sanchez and Beach played HSU's Kaitlyn Hathorn and Lauren Schaeffer in the other Semi and lost 8-0.
Amanda Almanza and
Alondra Torres Diaz took on Blair Ballard and Zaylie Sanchez of Howard Payne in the opening round of consolation play. Torres Diaz and Almanza won that match 8-1 before falling to HPU's Jessenia Ureste and Nave 8-5 in the consolation championship match.
In flight "B" doubles,
Nathalie Galligan and Andersen took on HSU's Tal'a Lawrence and McKenna Bryan in the Semifinals and dropped an 8-1 decision. Layne and
Laurel Turco took on Zoe Spayberry and Lovel of HPU in the consolation final and won 8-3 to claim the consolation title.
All of Saturday's matches were played at the Streich Tennis Center on the Hardin-Simmons campus. The UMHB women will return to action with the ITA Southwest Regional starting October 1
st in Abilene.
