Women's Basketball drops close one in conference opener

RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not overcome UT Dallas' dominant fourth quarter as the Cru fell to the Comets 62-58 Thursday night in Richardson. UMHB drops to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. UTD improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the ASC with the win.
 
The Cru took a 46-38 lead into the final period after leading by as many as 12 points in the third. UMHB would still lead by five points at 55-50 with 3:48 to go before the Comets used a 7-0 run to take a 57-55 lead with two minutes remaining. Madison McCoy's basket tied the game at 57, but the Comets wrapped four free throws around a Cru miss to build a 61-57 lead with 25 seconds on the clock. Each team would hit one more from the free-throw line, but UMHB could not find a way to cut the gap in the final seconds. UT Dallas would out score UMHB 24-12 in the final period of the contest. The game was close through the opening quarter, with the Cru leading 17-14 after ten minutes. UMHB clamped down defensively in the second period and pushed the lead to as many as 11 points before taking a 35-26 halftime lead.
 
A'Lexiss Benton led the Cru with 11 points and three assists. Hannah Eggleston added 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds. UMHB shot 51 percent from the field as a team and hit 4-7 from long-range, but went just 10-21 from the line. The Cru also turned the ball over 24 times on the night, leading to 21 points for the Comets.
 
Kelley Skinner topped UT Dallas with 22 points and eight boards. Raenett Hughes added 10 points for the Comets. UTD shot just 33 percent for the game as a team, but did go 17-20 from the free-throw line. UMHB was only able to convert 13 Comet turnovers into five points on the evening and both teams finished with 35 rebounds in the game.
 
The Cru will close out this road trip with a 1 pm start at University of the Ozarks Saturday in Clarksville, Arkansas. UMHB will then return home to host Louisiana College and Belhaven University next week at the Mayborn Campus Center.
