SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team earned a 56-0 shutout win over Austin College Saturday afternoon in Sherman. The win improved the Cru to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the 'Roos fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
It took the Cru just 59 seconds into the game to find the 'Roos end zone.
Kyle King hit
Aaron Sims with a 37-yard touchdown pass to put the Cru up. UMHB punted on its next possession before
Brenton Martin caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from King to cap a three-play, 35-yard drive. King broke free for 52 yards and six more points on the Cru's next drive to give UMHB a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
K.J. Miller opened the second quarter with an 81-yard punt return, setting up the Cru offense with a first-and-goal.
Aphonso Thomas used two runs to score and put the Cru up 28-0. Martin found the end zone again with 6:53 left in the second quarter, catching an 11-yard pass from
Tommy Bowden for the Cru's fifth score. UMHB's defense allowed the 'Roos just 24 total yards in the first half.
The Cru scored two more touchdowns on a pair of quarterback keepers to open the third and fourth quarters before
Ryan Redding set up a two-yard touchdown punch for
Montana Miller to give UMHB a 56-0 lead to seal the Cru's win.
Kyle King threw eight completions for 141 yards and two touchdowns while
Tommy Bowden added one touchdown in the air and three completions. Thomas was the Cru's run leader with 63 total yards and one touchdown while King added two touchdowns and 58 yards. Martin led the Cru's receiving core with two touchdowns and 61 yards while
Brandon Jordan added 46 yards and Sims caught one touchdown pass.
Omari Frazier led UMHB's defense with seven total tackles. Frazier had four solo efforts with one tackle for loss and one quarterback hurry.
Keith Gipson added six tackles and one tackle for loss.
E'Monte Smith and
Jacob Mueller each added six tackles; Smith had one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss while
Jacob Mueller added 0.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, October 16
th in a 1 p.m. game hosting Texas Lutheran University at Crusader Stadium in Belton.
